Burma Campaign UK

Burma Campaign UK is part of a global movement working for the promotion of human rights, democracy and development in Burma. We play a crucial role in coordinating the international campaign to free Burma and work closely with the Burmese democracy movement in Burma and in exile.

Burma’s military-backed government has one of the worst human rights records in the world. The Burmese army rapes, loots, burns, tortures and kills. Military spending is over five times the mere 3.9% of the budget that is spent on health.

Sham elections held by the regime in November 2010 brought in a new military drafted constitution that legalised dictatorship with a civilian front. A Parliament was created, but pro-military parties dominate it and the military have 25% of the seats. This means the military can veto any efforts in Parliament to try and make the constitution more democratic.

While there have been some reforms in Burma and there is potential for change, there haven’t been legal or constitutional reforms yet which reduce the power of the government or military, or guarantee human rights. In fact, human rights abuses have increased.

Many of the most serious abuses, such as rape, torture, executions, forced labour, use of child soldiers, and deliberate targeting of civilians by the Burmese Army since the government broke the ceasefire in Kachin State, have happened after Thein Sein became President in 2011.

When Aung San Suu Kyi was temporarily released in 2002 she said: “My release should not be looked at as a major breakthrough for democracy. For all people in Burma to enjoy basic freedom - that would be the major breakthrough."

Aung San Suu Kyi was released on Saturday November 13th 2010 but there are hundreds of other political prisoners in Burma.
